How to Appear on Google Maps: A Google Business Profile Guide

When someone in your city searches for a mechanic nearby or a beauty salon, they may find a map of businesses before visiting a website. That section draws on Google Business Profile. It is free for eligible businesses that serve customers in person, at a location or within a service area. Online-only businesses are not eligible. This guide helps review a profile in any city, from Miami to Bogotá or Madrid.

What is Google Business Profile?

It is your business listing on Google Maps and Search: name, category, opening hours, phone number, photos, reviews and options to call or get directions. You can manage it after claiming and verifying it. Otherwise, Google may show incomplete information or accept suggestions from other people.

Step 1: create or claim your profile

  1. Open Google Business Profile with a Google account controlled by your business.
  2. Search for your business name. If the listing exists, claim it; otherwise, create it.
  3. Use the real business name shown on signs or documents. Do not add keywords such as “Best Cheap Painter”: Google may suspend the profile.

Step 2: choose the right business type

  • Customer-facing location, such as a restaurant, salon or repair shop: provide the address where you serve customers.
  • Service-area business, such as a painter, plumber or cleaning company: hide the address if customers are not served there, and specify only areas you actually serve.

Choosing the wrong type can complicate verification. Define specific cities or areas in your region instead of claiming coverage you cannot provide.

Step 3: verify the profile

Google determines the verification methods available for your business. These may include phone, email, video or mail. Follow the instructions provided for your case. If a video is requested, show evidence of the business, location and your ability to manage it in the required format. Verification methods and availability can change.

Step 4: choose an accurate category

The primary category helps Google understand which searches your business is relevant to. Choose the most specific accurate option, such as a house painter rather than a general contractor, and add relevant secondary categories. Review similar businesses for context, but select categories that reflect your actual services.

Step 5: complete the business information

  • Opening hours, including holiday changes.
  • Phone number customers can reach.
  • Website so visitors can learn about your services and work.
  • Services and products, with clear descriptions and indicative prices where appropriate.
  • Description explaining what you do, where you operate and which languages your team actually supports.
  • Attributes available for your category and country, such as accessibility or payment methods, only when they apply.

Keep your name, address and phone number consistent across Google, your website and business directories. Inconsistent information can confuse customers and search systems. A complete profile is useful, but it does not guarantee a particular search position.

Step 6: add real, current photos

Use photos of your work, team, premises, vehicle or products. Real smartphone photos often communicate more about your business than generic stock images. Add new photos when you have relevant work or changes to show; keep outdated information and imagery under review.

Step 7: request and respond to reviews

Reviews can influence customers’ decisions and local search visibility.

  • Ask for honest feedback after a completed service, using the review link from your profile.
  • Respond politely to both positive and negative reviews. Use the customer’s language when your team can support it.
  • Do not buy reviews or offer discounts for them. This violates Google’s policies and can lead to enforcement.

Step 8: publish useful updates

The profile supports offers, events and updates. Share recent work or relevant changes and keep information current. A post can show a completed local project without promising an automatic ranking improvement. Avoid posting solely to meet a frequency target when you have nothing useful to add.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Creating duplicate profiles for the same business.
  • Using a different phone number from your website.
  • Leaving outdated opening hours.
  • Ignoring customer questions.
  • Assuming setup is permanent and never reviewing the profile again.

What if I do not have a website?

A Google profile can work without a website, but a clear website complements it. Visitors gain a place to review your services, work and contact options in more detail. Your profile, website and messaging channels should support each other rather than provide conflicting information.

Summary

  1. Claim and verify an eligible business profile.
  2. Choose the right business type and category.
  3. Complete and maintain consistent information.
  4. Add real photos and request honest reviews.
  5. Share relevant updates and respond to customers.
